Cabeza de Vaca was born to a noble Spanish family in 1490 at Jerez. He was well educated befitting the status of his family. Cabeza De Vaca took on the career of an explorer and was famous for being the first European to explore Texas abs Southwest America.Family name and Coat of Arms: Cabeza de Vaca means "head of a cow" and was derived from a peasant ancestor who brought about a great victory over the Moors at the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa 11 July, 1212. The peasant led the Spanish forces to to a vital, strategic position which he indicated by placing the skull of a cow near it. The peasant was ennobled, given a new name (Cabeza de Vaca - "head of a cow") and a coat of arms. Cabeza de Vaca learned and was inspired with exploring wfrom the stories that he has heard about the New World, and so he joined an expedition, that was lead by Pamfilo de Narvaez. Narvaez was commissioned to colonize Florida with 300 men. Cabeza was the crown treasurer of the fleet, which was a high position. They reach Hispaniola where they stay for a month. They traveled then to Cuba, and then finally, to Florida and arrive in 1528, April 12. Narvaez decides to split in between land and sea expeditions, and Cabeza de Vaca was assigned to the land. Then different disasters destroyed the people of that crew, and in the end only 4 people survived. They were then captured and enslaved by the Indians. After a year, they escape and spend the next 8 years exploring Texas and Mexico, living with the natives. They explored their way to Mexico City, and then they make their way back home to Spain.

Cabeza de Vaca was born into a rich family in 1490, and decided to take up exploring "The New World". He traveled on an exploration in the New World that was lead by Pamfilo de Narvaez. Pamfilo de Narvaez was sponsored by the Emperor (Carlos the 5th), and their mission was to colonize the Gulf Coast (Florida). Cabeza's job in the ship was the crowned treasurer of the expedition. On June 17, 1527, the expedition left with 300 men. They then stopped in Hispaniola fro about a month, and then they traveled to Cuba. They finally arrived in Florida in Tampa bay, and immediately claimed the land for Spain. Narvaez decided to split in between land and sea expeditions, and Cabeza de Vaca and his group got stuck with land. As they left, many things whittled down the numbers of the crew, and he ended up 15 men, until only four were left. They were then taken as slaves for a year, but escaped to the mainland. For 8 hard years the four survivors (including Cabeza) traveled and explored Texas and Mexico, while trading with the natives.

The journey of Cabeza de Vaca remains one of the most amazing feats of exploration in the Americas. Cabeza de Vaca was born into the Spanish nobility in 1490. Little of his early life is known, except that he made his career in the military. In early 1527 he left Spain as a part of a royal expedition intended to occupy the mainland of North America. After their fleet was battered by a hurricane off the shore of Cuba, the expedition secured a new boat and departed for Florida. Despite this confident declaration, the expedition was on the verge of disaster. Narváez's decision to split his land and sea forces proved a grievous error, as the ships were never able to rendezvous with the land expedition. Expelled and pursued by the Indians, suffering from numerous diseases, the surviving members of the expedition were reduced to huddling in a coastal swamp and living off the flesh of their horses.

Questions:
Who were these men?

They were sent by the Emperor (300 -600 men) to colonize the entire Gulf coast of the New World. Cabeza was not actually the captain of the ship, Pamfilo de Narvaez was. Cabez de Vaca was only one of the four survivors, and the person who charted their travels. Cabeza was actually appointed the crown treasurer.
When did they sail?
They set sail on June 17th 1527. Cabez de Vaca was born on 1490 into a rich family. He got his name from his mother, which came from a ancestor who helped win a war by placing a cow skull on the pass where they needed to go. They got shipwrecked on 1528 April 12.
*Where did they go?
They were shipwrecked on Florida. They had 300- 600 men, for Narvaez expedition (for colonization). They then went farther inland and stayed there. They stayed there for a while and then "escaped" with very few survivors to the Isle of Misfortune (Galveston Island). The survivors looked so dreary that they looked like "death", and they looked so bad that some Indians cried for them. He and his crew lived among the Indians as slaves, until the spring, when collected bird eggs and hunted for food and clothes and lived alone. They then decided to leave the island, and moved to nicer tribes. They decided to move along with the semi nomadic Indians as a sea shell traders. They then learned earned of other survivors from the wreck (Castillo, Estevanico, a Moroccan Morr, and Dorantes) from some of the Indians. They walked along the Gulf of Mexico for no reason. They walked for 2000 miles, and he walked them through Northern Mexico.
*Why did they go?
They went to colonize the entire Gulf Coast of the New World, which in their view was the current state of Florida. Most of the people who were sent to colonize died and there were only four survivors, who most explored Mexico.
*What happened as they were sailing and when they landed?
They encountered strong storms when they were sailing but not many hardships, and when they landed many people died due to various disasters. When they landed, they were captured by Indians and forced to work as slaves. They then escaped, and collected berries and hunted for food. When they decided to escape the island, and moved in with the nicer tribes as seashell traders. When they found word of other survivors, they all joined together and then explored.
